The legend of the star of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie
The star of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, suspended from a 135-meter-long chain, creates a spectacle sixty meters above the village. Over the centuries, its origin and significance have been lost, giving way to fascinating tales and legends.
Among these tales, the legend of the Chevalier de Blacas is the most widespread. Blacasset, descendant of a noble lineage, promised to hang a sixteen-pointed star above Moustiers as a sign of his return from captivity during the Crusades. The current gold-covered star has ten branches, having fallen several times according to village archives. A fiction by the poet Frédéric Mistral, but a captivating story.
Another legend tells of the tragic fate of young lovers from feuding families, who committed suicide to preserve their forbidden love. The act led to reconciliation between the families, who laid the chain as a sign of unity.
There are also tales of the Magi and the Knights Templar, hinting at treasures hidden in the mountains. Today, some twenty legends surround the Moustiers-Sainte-Marie chain, adding a mystical touch to this enchanting destination.
