Nestled at an altitude of over 2,200 meters, in the very heart of the Mercantour National Park, lies Lac d’Allos, Europe’s largest natural mountain lake. This peaceful spot is surrounded by wilderness. To reach its shores, you can park your car at the Laus parking lot (please note that access to the Laus parking lot is regulated, more info here), then set off on a one-hour walk, with hiking boots on your feet and a rucksack on your shoulder. On this approach walk, you’ll pass through the hamlets of Villard and the Cluite forest.
You can also reach Lac d’Allos by two other routes:
- From the village of Allos, along the GR56B: although a little longer, this route takes you to the lake without the need for a vehicle. Allow around 7 hours for the round trip, and follow the red and white markings.
- From the La Cluite parking lot (but beware: access is restricted): 5h round-trip walk.
Hike to the lake in pure, blossoming nature
As you approach the lake, the soothing sound of running water is heard, creating a natural melody that soothes the soul. The hike to Lac d’Allos is in itself an invigorating adventure for body and soul.
As you follow the winding paths through the alpine forests, you’ll be enveloped by the freshness of the pure air and the richness of the local flora. Enjoy the serenity of the surroundings and the panorama: a crystal-clear lake shimmering against the rocky peaks. Relaxing at the water’s edge, combined with the beauty of the landscape, brings a deep sense of tranquility, allowing you to release the tensions of everyday life.
Encounter with alpine vegetation and local wildlife
In the surrounding area, the scene is a mixture of larches, alpine meadows and multicolored flowers in shades of yellow, blue and red. In the distance, you might be lucky enough to hear the whistle of a marmot or spot herds of ibex, recognizable by their curved horns, or even white-necked chamois.
To make the most of the day, take the trail around Lac d’Allos. It takes just 1h30 to complete the loop, perfect for a walk with young children.
Once you’ve had your fill of frolicking around the lake, head to the refuge du lac d’Allos for a hot chocolate and a delicious blueberry tart. You’ll be greeted by a charming stone terrace and rustic wooden interior. Relaxation guaranteed!
Although swimming is tempting after a long walk, it is strictly forbidden. Hiking, photography, fishing (in compliance with park regulations) and wildlife observation are just some of the ways to enjoy this natural setting. Come and discover the magic of Lac d’Allos and let yourself be transported by the poetry of this unique experience.
