But what about rafting?

What is it?

Rafting is a water sports activity that involves descending rough rivers in an inflatable raft. This adventure sport is generally enjoyed by groups of 4 to 8 people, with an experienced guide on board to steer the raft and ensure the safety of participants.

The raft is specially designed to tackle rapids and whitewater. It is often made of inflatable material, making it strong and buoyant even in difficult conditions. Equipped with life jackets and helmets, participants paddle with the guide to maneuver the raft through natural obstacles such as rapids, rocks and whirlpools.

Rafting offers an exciting and immersive experience in nature, allowing participants to feel the adrenaline of the rapids while enjoying the picturesque scenery of the waterways. It’s an activity that combines sport and adventure, offering outdoor enthusiasts a unique way to discover the beauty of rivers and gorges. The level of difficulty can vary according to the route chosen, making rafting accessible to different levels of experience, from beginners to seasoned enthusiasts.

Understanding the role of dams

for whitewater sports

The Gorges du Verdon offer ideal terrain for whitewater activities. The Castillon and Chaudane dams upstream, and Sainte-Croix, Quinson and Esparron downstream, regulate the Verdon’s water level. The Chaudane dam influences the flow, creating perfect conditions for rafting and canoeing when open. In summer, regular releases on Tuesdays and Fridays guarantee aquatic adventures. In September, releases are irregular but frequent. In spring, releases depend on weather conditions, ideal for rafting and canoeing. Discover the wild aspects of the Haut-Verdon.
